Chennai woman ends life after husband justifies extramarital affair citing SC verdict on adultery

CHENNAI: A woman committed suicide at MGR Nagar here on Saturday night after her husband, a watchman, challenged her that she had no right to stop him from having an extramarital affair as the Supreme Court had ruled three days ago that adultery was not a crime.

This is the first casualty reported here after the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday decriminalising adultery.

Earlier, under Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), adultery was an offence and a convict could be sentenced to five years jail term.

Police said Pushpalatha, 24, of Bharathi Nagar, Nesapakkam married John Paul Franklin, 27, two years ago. The couple had a love marriage after a strong opposition from their families. The couple had a child, police said.

The woman was said to have been undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. Franklin is employed as a security guard at a corporation park in the locality.

Franklin began distancing from his wife soon after she fell sick and did not support her financially.

Apparently upset over this, Pushpalatha conveyed the issue to one of her husband’s friends when he told her about his closeness with another woman.

Pushpalatha’s suspicion became strong as he turned up home late in recent days.

The woman picked up a fight with him after she came to know about his illicit affair and asked him to part ways with the other woman.

Franklin refused to budge when she threatened to file a police complaint. “He went to the extent of telling her that she cannot book a case against him as the Supreme Court had ruled that extramarital affair was no more a crime,” said an investigating officer.

Dejected over this, she decided to end her life and hanged herself when she was alone at home on Saturday night. One of the woman’s relatives found her dead and alerted the MGR Nagar police.

The police were questioning Franklin.

As per the Supreme Court order, if adultery leads to a person’s suicide, abetment of suicide charge can be slapped against the spouse responsible for it.

Tanushree Dutta Says Director Vivek Agnihotri Told Her ‘Take Off Your Clothes And Dance’

Tanushree Dutta has also called out Nana Patekar over alleged sexual harassment.

After calling out Nana Patekar for allegedly harassing her on the sets of a movie in 2008, actress Tanushree Dutta has revealed that movie director Vivek Agnihotri told her “kapde utaar ke naacho” (take off your clothes and dance) while filming Chocolate in 2005.

In an exclusive interview with DNA, Dutta revealed that Agnihotri asked her to do so in order to provide her co-star Irrfan Khan with “cues.”

“This guy (Vivek Agnihotri) wanted me to give cues to an actor (Irrfan Khan). It was an actor’s close-up. It was not even my shot. I was not even going to be in the shot. It was the actor’s close-up and he had to just look at something and give expressions. This director, he told me ‘jao jaake kapde utaar ke naacho, usko cues do.‘” she said.

Dutta said that Khan and Suniel Shetty, who was present on set, shot back at Agnihotri.

“…The actor was horrified. And, because he had done some work, he could say something. He just told the director, ‘What are you talking about? I can give my closeup. Mujhe acting aati hai’. Suneil Shetty also spoke up. He was also there, he heard it and he got offended by it. He was like, ‘Main aayun kya wahaan cues dene ke liye? Yeah of course, there are good people in the industry,” she said.

Agnihotri, who has been tweeting since the morning today, has not responded to Dutta’s allegation
