Panic spread in Pisoli near Kondhwa when some residents called the cops about foul odour emanating from a flat. Police found decomposed bodies of a man and his daughter at the flat. The man, a PhD holder, had left a suicide note that mentions a family dispute as the reason he was forced to take the extreme step.

The deceased, identified as Dr Kiran Devendra Patil (65) and his daughter Niyata Kiran Patil (17), lived by themselves in the apartment. Due to a family dispute, Kiran’s wife had not been living with them. The father-daughter had been residing on the first floor of the Kingston Elysia residential complex. According to police, Patil was working as a software consultant and Niyata was pursuing her studies through distant learning and recently shifted to the society.

Neighbours contacted the police around 11am, complaining about the foul smell coming from the apartment. One of the neighbours, who did not wish to be named, told Pune Mirror, “There was a bad smell for the past couple of days that a lot of people in the society complained about. However, it was not that strong and we did not suspect that it was coming from the locked flat. On Thursday morning, the odour became so strong that we could easily locate its source from the flat and were forced to approach the cops.”

Senior inspector Satish Govekar of Kondhwa police station, who visited the spot, told Pune Mirror, “When we opened the door, we found bodies of the father-daughter duo in a sitting position on two different chairs. Both the bodies were in a decomposed state, which is the reason the foul smell had spread all over the society. Looking at the condition of the bodies we suspect that the two people might have committed suicide five to six days back.”

According to nearby residents, the father and daughter didn’t interactive much with other people. One of the residents of the complex said, “They had shifted to the place recently and therefore they hadn’t communicated with other residents that much. Since they were not keeping in touch with the neighbours, nobody even noticed that they had not been seen for the past few days.”

When police carried out a thorough search of the house, they found an almost eight to ten pages long suicide note. “Patil has mentioned about the frustration that he was going through due to the disputes between him and his wife. His wife had filed a case of domestic violence against him. We are now analysing further details mentioned in the suicide note,” Govekar added.

Cops said that the Patil family originally hails from Thane. “The father and daughter were earlier staying in Thane and had shifted to Pune about eight to nine months back. Patil’s wife had not been living with them since 2007. We have now managed to establish contact with their relatives in Mumbai who will be coming to Pune. Once they are here, we will be able to get more details about the deceased.” Meanwhile police have sent both the bodies for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death.
