Woman constable strangles live-in-partner
BAREILLY: In a shocking incident, in Saharanpur a woman constable allegedly strangulated her colleague and live-in partner, also a constable, for putting pressure on her not to get married after she recently got engaged, according to police sources. The two – Rashmi Kumari and Lalit Kasana – had been in a relationship for six years ever since they joined the service in 2011. Lalit was married with two children while Rashmi was to get married on April 24.
Police said Rashmi allegedly committed the crime on Monday night and she was arrested on Tuesday. The accused was produced in court on Wednesday and sent to jail. During interrogation, the accused remained adamant on her statement that she didn’t kill her beau but that he had committed suicide by hanging himself.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Love Kumar said, “Rashmi’s marriage date was fixed on April 24 with a man who works in Meerut court, but Lalit was opposed to it. The couple had been living together on the first floor of a rented house in Church Compound area. On Monday evening, Lalit arrived home around 8 pm after his duty hours. Around 10:30 pm, the tenants who live on the ground floor of the house asked Lalit to park his bike properly so as to make space for their motorcycles, and he told them to wait for a while. Around 11 pm, hearing Rashmi’s cries, the other tenants rushed to the first floor and found Lalit lying unconscious on the floor. He was immediately taken to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.”
According to the postmortem report, Lalit was strangled to death, the SSP said, adding that Rashmi’s leave for marriage was sanctioned on Saturday. On Monday night, Rashmi told her seniors that Lalit had consumed poison but after the postmortem report, she gave a different version in which she claimed that Lalit hanged himself from the ceiling fan after consuming poison and that she brought him down after finding him hanging.
Superintendent of police, city, Sanjay Singh, told TOI, “On the basis of circumstantial evidence, we have sent the accused constable, Rashmi, to jail. Further investigation into the case is on.”
According to sources, Lalit and Rashmi had joined the police service in 2011 and were deputed on Dial 100 service. Both of them hail from Baghpat. They were earlier deployed at Gagalheri police station in Saharanpur. Lalit had got married around six years ago.
