Kid reveals mother’s role in father’s murder

TNN Aug 17, 2013, 03.25AM IST

LUCKNOW: A seven-year-old’s innocent narration of how his father died, landed his mother and her paramour in police dragnet in Lucknow on Friday. The incident relates to the murder of an artist cum stage performer in Sarvodayanagar of Ghazipur police circle during the intervening night of August 4 and August 5.

Late night on August 4, the Ghazipur police came to know about the murder of Jagdish Verma (43). His body was found inside his house and a blood-stained cricket bat of his was also recovered. Jagdish’s widow Pinki had told the police that two associates of her husband had come to meet him. They were sitting and talking inside the house when she suddenly heard cries for help and rushed to the room where they were sitting, only to find her husband lying in a pool of blood with injuries on his head. A blood-stained cricket bat was also recovered from the scene which the miscreants had apparently used to kill Jagdish.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination which confirmed that Jagdish died due to severe and multiple head injuries. A case was lodged with Ghazipur police station in connection with the incident on the complaint of Pinki.

Police investigations into the case led them to a dead end after the investigators failed to find out any acquaintance of the victim who went by the name Dholakiya. Further investigations were underway but with no particular line to probe, the police were working on trial-and-error basis till about a week ago when the 7-year-old son of Jagdish gave away a clue to the police.

During one of his visits to Jagdish’s residence, an investigator happened to talk to the son of the deceased who recollected before him how his father was murdered. When this happened, Pinki was not in the room. The child told the cop that "uncle" was beating his father with a cricket bat and then "mummy" also helped the uncle. Taking it as a clue, police took the cellphone of Pinki on surveillance and soon things began to fall in place.

It came to light that Pinki before her marriage to Jagdish some eight years ago, had met Vinod and fallen in love with him. Vinod is a resident of Pilibhit and works in sweet meat shop.

Thereafter, she was married to Jagdish. Last year, when Pinki went to Pilibhit she met Vinod and was regularly in touch with him on phone ever since. On the day of the murder, Vinod had come to meet Pinki in Lucknow when he was confronted by Jagdish which eventually led to the murder. Police arrested Pinki and Vinod on Friday and sent them to jail.

Bengal woman alleges harassment by cop

Bengal woman alleges harassment by cop

Kolkata: A divorced woman has approached West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, besides rights bodies, alleging that a police officer blackmailed her after she rejected his "advances" and implicated her male friend in a case.

The woman, a resident of Jiaganj in Murshidabad district, in her identical complaints to Banerjee as well as the state rights and women’s panels, alleged that the police officer had been repeatedly "SMSing and calling her and threatening her with dire consequences" after she "rejected his advances".

The officer, whose name is being withheld, rubbished the allegations.

The complainant accused the officer – an additional superintendent of police – of "intentionally arresting her male friend on false charges to avenge her refusal".

"This officer had earlier helped me in getting divorce. Later, he started SMSing and calling me, inviting me to visit his bungalow. After I refused, he has been threatening and blackmailing me. His subordinates Saturday arrested my friend on false charges," the woman told IANS.

She alleged that she and her friend were also assaulted by policemen who had come to arrest her friend.

Rubbishing the allegations, the police officer said the man was arrested in connection with an old vehicle theft case.

"I have not sent her any SMS or made calls to her. As regards the arrest, the man was arrested in connection with a pending case of motor vehicle theft in which the woman has also been named," said the officer.

The woman has also claimed inaction by the state government.

"I wrote to the CM, women’s commission, human rights commission as well as top police officers of the district (Murshidabad) Aug 13, but no action has been taken yet. I fear for my life now," added the woman.

Monty Panesar’s marriage ends after bitter divorce battle

Monty Panesar’s marriage ends after bitter divorce battle

PTI LONDON, AUGUST 19, 2013 | UPDATED 00:56 IST

Panesar was recently in news for getting arrested for drunken misbehaviour and urinating in public. PTI

England spinner Monty Panesar’s marriage with pharmacist wife Gursharan Rattan has finally ended after a bitter divorce battle, according to media reports.

The 31-year-old spinner, who was recently in news for getting arrested for drunken misbehaviour and urinating in public, had managed to keep his separation from his wife a secret and their divorce was finalised only recently.

Monty was dropped from the Ashes series as a result of poor form, which is now being linked to his personal turmoil.

"Monty was devastated by the breakdown of his marriage and is still coming to terms with his recent divorce. His personal struggles have been a direct result of that," The ‘Sunday Mirror’ quoted a source as saying.

A spokesperson for the sportsman confirmed the divorced.

Friends said he blamed his wife’s family for making their marriage "increasingly difficult."

Monty married Gursharan three years ago in a traditional Sikh ceremony. The Luton-born player had praised her for the "greater stability" she gave him during the early days of his successful England career.

Earlier this month, Monty was thrown out of Brighton’s Shoosh Club after he reportedly hassled a group of women. He then urinated onto the doormen of the club before running off.

Monty, who is studying for a sports science master’s degree, could face the sacking this week from his county team Sussex which has been investigating the incident. But his former club Northamptonshire could offer him a lifeline to rebuild his shattered career.
