Maid’s husband ‘killed’ Canada-bound girl

TNN Aug 25, 2013, 08.16PM IST

LUDHIANA: In a new twist to the murder case of 24-year-old Canada-bound girl of KrishnaNagar, the police have claimed that the husband of victim’s maid was behind the crime and not the girl’s sister-in-law, who was earlier booked in the case.

Gurvinderjeet Kaur, the victim who had done Bachelors in Dental Surgery, was found killed at her residence by her mother Harjinder Kaur on August 22. She was to leave for Canada with her uncle on August 27.
Ludhiana police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill in a press conference claimed that Rakesh Kumar, husband of Aarti who was a maid at victim’s house for the past 3 years, tried to rape her under the influence of alcohol and when Gurvinderjeet resisted his attempts, he strangulated her.

Police have arrested Rakesh and booked him under Section 302 of the IPC.

According to the commissioner, the girl had lent her mobile phone to Rakesh who wanted to make some important calls. But as he did not return the phone for a long time, she went to get it back from maid’s husband. He was heavily drunk at the time and tried to rape her. He killed her as she resisted his attempts. Police also said the accused applied hot iron press on her body to avoid suspicion.

The police commissioner said Rakesh has confessed his crime during interrogation.

Earlier, victim’s sister-in-law Tejinder Kaur was booked for the crime after Gurvinder’s mother lodged a complaint against her.

Gurvinderjeet, the victim, had done Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). Her mother Harjinder Kaur, a schoolteacher, had accused her daughter-in-law of the murder as Tejinder didn’t get along well with the victim. They had some tussle over property too.

On August 22, Gurvinderjeet was taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital where she was declared brought dead. A case of murder had been registered against Gurvinderjeet’s sister-in-law Tejinder Kaur.

The autopsy had revealed that the victim was first tortured by an iron press, whose marks were spotted on her arm, chest and abdomen, and was then strangulated to death. There were injury marks on her head too.

Sources had informed that Bhupinder Singh, brother of the deceased, had married Tejinder against the wishes of the family and that was also a reason of bitterness between Gurvinderjeet and Tejinder.

4 held for abetting teacher’s suicide

TNN | Aug 31, 2013, 05.27 AM IST

CHANDRAKONA: Four persons, allegedly Trinamool workers, have been arrested and charged with abetting the suicide of a schoolteacher after trying to extort Rs 2 lakh from him by levelling a false molestation charge against him.

Pratap Ghosh, a part-time teacher at Bhairavpur Ramgopi Vidyaniketan in Chandrakona, West Midnapore, was found hanging from a tree near his house in West Midnapore’s Jamgeriya village on Tuesday.

A police source said that a Class VIII girl who used to take tuition from him had levelled a "false charge" of molestation against him a few days back.

Pratap’s wife Manju and brother had lodged a complaint with the Chandrakona town police against 12 people, including the girl’s father. Police found a suicide note on the body, in whichGhosh had written that he had been falsely accused.

Manju said: "The girl’s father informed the school head teacher about the false allegation of molestation but did not dare lodge a police complaint. Some local Trinamool workers stopped my husband while he was returning home on Monday. Together, they asked him either to pay Rs 2 lakh or face a severe beating and public humiliation. That same evening, my husband told me the names of the persons who had harassed him and I named them in the FIR."

West Midnapore SP Bharati Ghosh said an allegation of molestation had been brought against Pratap. "We have arrested four of the accused and an investigation is on. The investigators will also probe whether the handwriting on the suicide note is that of Pratap," the SP said.

The four arrested persons were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

Students of the school demonstrated in front of the girl’s house on Friday, accusing her of making a false allegation against their geography teacher and pushing him to take his life.

The protesters said they had asked their head teacher, Tushar Ghosh, to expel her from school. Ghosh said a meeting of the school managing committee would be held soon to discuss the demand.

Why Jabir Ali killed Jabir Ali

TNN Aug 9, 2013, 04.36AM IST

NEW DELHI: Fifty-year-old Jabir Ali alias Haji, who was killed at home in GuruTeghBahadur Enclave in northeast Delhi in June, had hoped his namesake back home would watch over his village plot. Little did he know that the man coveted his land and wife and, in a bid to gain both, would end up murdering him.

A team led by inspector Attar Singh and ACP Ved Prakash has solved the murder of Ali, a resident of Janata Flats in GTB Enclave, which took place on the intervening night of June 15 and June 16. Three contract killers have been arrested. They were identified as Jane Alam alias Tinku (27), Amir Hussain (22) and Hanif (26), all residents of Ramjanpur village in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh.

"The victim’s wife, Rukhsana alias Guddi, had a dubious past. She had eloped with a man from Punjab about five years ago but was brought home by her husband," DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said.

Special commissioner S N Srivastava said Ali left Rukhsana at his village when he brought her home five years ago. He owned 150 bighas land in Ramjanpur and he had let it out to a man, also named Jabir Ali, for farming.

"When the victim left his wife there, she had an affair with the tenant. When the victim came to know about it, he brought her back to Delhi," Srivastava said.

Rukhsana conspired with her lover to eliminate her husband and transfer the ownership of the land to him. The duo offered Rs 4 lakh to Aale, a resident of the village, to kill Ali. Aale took Hanif’s help and plotted the murder. They came to Delhi on June 12 and stayed in a rented house. They hired four men—Qamar, Amir, Shanu and Jane Alam. "All of them reached Ali’s house around 10pm on June 15. Ruksana hid them on the first floor. The victim came home around 12.30pm. Ruksana gave him food laced with sedatives and also drugged other family members. When Ali got drowsy after half-an-hour, the accused murdered him and left," Srivastava said. The victim was found stabbed to death by his son Sajid Khan around 2.15am, said police. A bloodstained knife was lying beside the body, they added.

"It was evident that it was an inside job. There had been no forced entry and no signs of struggle. All valuables were intact," said Yadav.

Woman accuses lover of setting her ablaze, dies

TNN Aug 16, 2013, 02.25AM IST

BANGALORE: A woman who accused her married lover of setting her on fire, died at the Victoria Hospital burns ward on Thursday afternoon.

Pavitra, 21, a resident of Srirampuram, in her statement to the tahsildar on Thursday morning, said she and Bharathi, 32, a native of Tamil Nadu and resident of Subramanya Colony near Guddadahalli in Hebbal, were colleagues in a high-end watch strap making unit in Gorguntepalya of Peenya Industrial Area Phase III. They had a live-in relationship, with Pavitra staying with him on Sundays and holidays for the past two to three months.

DCP (North) Sandeep Patil told TOI that Pavitra didn’t realize Bharathi was married, and his wife and children were living in Tamil Nadu. "Last Sunday, Pavitra landed up at his residence and asked him to marry her. But he refused, and confessed that he was already married. Pavitra didn’t believe him, and continued to pester him. On Monday morning, he allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her afire," police said, quoting her statement.

Police took up an attempt to murder case against Bharathi, and later converted it to a murder charge. "Bharathi also sustained 40% burns and is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital," he said.

However, sources in Victoria Hospital said Pavitra had confessed to them that she had set herself ablaze. "But the statement before the tahsildar holds legal sanction," sources said.

In his statement, Bharathi told doctors that Pavitra took the kerosene can from the kitchen, poured it out and set herself ablaze. "I tried to douse the fire and sustained burns," he reportedly said.

FIR registered by victim against Asaram Bapu reveals a horrific tale of sexual assault

SUDHANSHU MISHRA | MAIL TODAY | JAIPUR, AUGUST 31, 2013 | UPDATED 10:50 IST

Asaram Bapu, accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl at a Jodhpur ashram, allegedly molested the victim for more than an hour and even demanded oral sex, and when she protested, the self-styled godman "threatened" to kill her parents. "He (Asaram) switched off the lights of the room and called me in from the back door. He locked the room from inside and started molesting me. When I started shouting, he threatened to kill my parents and closed my mouth," the girl stated in her complaint, on the basis of which an FIR was lodged against the controversial spiritual guru.

"He kissed me and objectionably touched me. He caressed all over my body and asked for oral sex. He was wearing no clothes. He forcibly started undressing me, and I was crying. He again closed my mouth. He continued to molest me for more than an hour," the girl said narrating her traumatic experience. "As I was leaving the room, he once again threatened me against speaking out," she added.

The victim, who hails from UP’s Shahjahanpur, was a student of Class XII at Asaram’s gurukul in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. Describing how she reached the Jodhpur ashram, she said: "One day, I felt dizzy. My hostel warden told me that I was under the influence of ‘bad souls’. She said she would talk to Asaram regarding this. On August 7, the warden rang up my home and informed that I was unwell and should be taken to some big city for treatment. On August 9, my parents came to the girls’ hostel to take me away. That time the warden told them that I was under the influence of ghosts and bad spirits."

"She said Bapu had asked to take me to him as soon as possible. My father came to know that Bapu would be in Delhi on August 12. We reached Delhi on August 13 where we came to know that he was in Jodhpur. Then Bapu’s key aide, who remains in the service of Bapu, asked us to reach Jodhpur. On August 14, 2013, we reached Manai village near Jodhpur where Bapu was staying. He told me that he would rid me of the ghosts," she said.

Based on the complaint, the Delhi Police booked Asaram under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), besides sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and the POCSO Act, on August 21. The case was later transferred to the Jodhpur police. Asaram, who was to appear before the Jodhpur police by Friday evening for questioning in the case, failed to make it, with his son claiming that he had been taken ill. "Bapu has booked a flight ticket to Delhi. He can’t fly now due to his ill health. He will appear (before the police) as soon as he gets well… He will cooperate with interrogators," Asaram’s son Swami Narayan Sai said in Bhopal.

In Jodhpur, police officers said the time was not ripe for the arrest of the godman and his three employees accused in the case. "A special police team would leave on Friday night for Bhopal to hear his defence and only then the question of arrest would arise," said Jodhpur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph.

Joseph’s deputy Ajay Pal Lamba, however, said there was a strong possibility of the 72year-old’s arrest if he failed to come up with a convincing story supported by evidence. In Ahmedabad, Asaram’ lawyer Sudhir Nanavati moved the Gujarat High Court on Friday seeking a transit bail for him. However, with Justice A.J. Desai indicating that he was inclined to reject it, Nanavati withdrew the plea.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in an indirect attack on Asaram, called him "a demon". Speaking at a function in south Gujarat, Modi said one may be knowledgeable on scriptures or accomplished in several areas, but "if they do not respect women, society sees them as rakshasas (demons)."

With inputs from D.P. Bhattacharya in Gandhinagar and Anup Dutta in Bhopal.
